What is S.T.E.M. and why does it matter?

You may have heard the acronym S.T.E.M. being passed about among educators .  Simply put S.T.E.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  More than an acronym, S.T.E.M. has become the bugle call for preparing tomorrow’s generation for the “knowledge economy”.

There is a sense of urgency in Canada among government, education, and business institutions that “Canada is falling behind internationally in the number of bright, capable young people pursuing careers in STEM-related fields.”1

Other countries are approaching S.T.E.M. activities for elementary children the same way Canadian parents involve themselves in their kids participation in hockey.  They are willing to make an investment, willing to wake up at 6am to get them to events, and willing to watch and encourage their progress.

Love hockey, but the odds of hockey actually being a career for the millions of kids invested in it is a lottery ticket.  The odds that a passion and skill set in science, technology, engineering or math, will benefit the child in the future is almost assured.

We have seen what being world leading in hockey has done for Canada and it has been substantial.  However, positioning Canada as a world leader in knowledge-based economies, would assure a bright future for the coming generation and beyond.

Sylvan Learning Centre in Red Deer believes strongly in S.T.E.M. We have invested heavily to bring classes and camps that will teach as well as foster collaboration and creativity, around S.T.E.M. related subjects.  We have seen that kids approach Robotics, Engineering and Computer Coding with a fun mindset.  Kids as young as grade 2 quickly learn to do things that amaze parents and educators: building and programming moving robots, bridges, and coding their own video games.

If you get a chance to talk to a parent of a child involved in one of our courses they will tell you that kids are excited to come each week.  The natural curiosity of children is a good fit for the hands-on nature of discovery which is built in to our classes.  Not only is there guided instruction, but there is  also room for kids to create on their own from what they have learned.

If you can see this for your child we encourage you to call us at our Centre in Red Deer, 403-341-6110 or stop by our centre at #2 5020 – 68st, on the North side of Red Deer.

We have Robotics, Coding, and Engineering for Kids as well as Math Edge.  This new work-sheet based approach to math makes it fun and is the most affordable math tutoring of its kind. We have prepared our courses to start with kids as early as grade 1 and can keep them engaged through grade 7.

Don’t forget about us at report card time either.  Our certified teachers, can offer the close up attention required to keep students on track and can attend to every puzzled look.  Nothing beats sitting right across the desk from your student when you want to hold their attention.
